Liverpool transfer news as Alexander Isak bid 'expected' and Arne Slot chases six-goal wonderkid

2 weeks ago 75

Liverpool has already been very active in the transfer market this summer. And yesterday, it reached an agreement to sell Luis Diaz, the Colombian winger, to Bayern Munich.

Getting a deal done for a fee of around $88 million (£66 million), Liverpool is letting the South American go for a good price. He only had two years left on his contract, and at 28, it is harder to predict what the next couple of seasons might look like for him physically.

With a forward moving on and Darwin Nunez and Federico Chiesa potentially exiting too — reinforcements will be required despite the arrival of Hugo Ekitike last week. Here is the Liverpool.com verdict on the transfer gossip to emerge around the Reds today.

Alexander Isak (Newcastle United)

Newcastle United is "braced" for a formal approach from Liverpool after the sale of Luis Diaz to Bayern Munich, according to the Daily Mail. The North East side is already aware of the Reds' interest.

Over the weekend, Eddie Howe admitted that Newcastle was having a difficult summer. And on Sunday, he confirmed that Isak would definitely not be joining up with his teammates in Asia, having been left at home for the start of the pre-season tour.

"It's business as usual for the players," Howe said in a press conference. "Naturally, we're going to miss a player of Alex's quality and the group are going to feel that.

"There's no denying that. I can't sit here and claim that they won't. But they're a very a professional group of players and they're doing brilliantly as far as I can see in terms of managing the situation."

Newcastle has not altered its stance on wanting to keep its best players, with Isak very much at the top of that list. But with the player wanting to move on, its hand might eventually be forced.

The Magpies are trying to sign Yoane Wissa from Brentford. They are also thought to have held talks with RB Leipzig over a move for Slovenian striker Benjamin Sesko.

Liverpool.com says: If the Reds can pull off this deal, it will be a huge move. Isak is a world-class No. 9. It will take a fee of more than $150M in all likelihood, but even at that amount, it could be worth it.

Idrissa Gueye (Metz)

Liverpool is one of a number of interested parties on the table for the 18-year-old Metz striker Idrissa Gueye, according to Football Insider. He enjoyed a breakout campaign last season, scoring six times in all competitions.

The Reds are said to have "made an inquiry" for the Senegalese teenager. Fellow Premier League sides, including West Ham United, Sunderland and Crystal Palace, are also said to be sniffing around.

There is also interest from around Europe in the player. Manchester United, Brentford and Burnley have also been credited with taking a look at Gueye too, though it isn't clear how easy it would be for someone of his age to get a work permit.

Liverpool.com says: Gueye might be a talent but there are bigger priorities for Liverpool at the moment. As well as chasing Isak, the Reds also need to ensure they have enough options at center-back.
