Liverpool transfer news as Marc Guehi January plan emerges after deadline day deal collapses

3 days ago 23

Liverpool is set to reignite its interest in Marc Guehi when the transfer window reopens, following Crystal Palace's decision to halt a deadline day move for the England star.

Guehi, 25, is in the final year of his contract at Selhurst Park and has been heavily linked with the Premier League champions in recent months. Over the weekend, it was revealed that the clubs were once again in talks over a deal for the central defender, with a $47 million fee agreed on deadline day.

However, last-minute drama unfolded as Palace faced challenges in their quest to sign defensive reinforcements; Julio Igor opted out of a loan move to pursue a switch to West Ham, leaving Jaydee Canvot as their only defensive incoming. Consequently, Palace decided against approving Guehi's departure - despite him having completed part of his medical.

While Guehi won't be gracing Anfield anytime soon, The Mail have confirmed that he remains a player of interest to Liverpool, who is likely to attempt to sign him again in January or next summer, when Guehi would be a free agent.

The Reds had more success in their pursuit of Alexander Isak, who sealed a British record $169M move to Anfield late on deadline day. However, he was not joined by Guehi, even though a deal sheet giving both clubs an extra couple of hours to finalize a deal was requested.

Oliver Glasner, the Eagles' head coach, has been open about his wish to retain Guehi beyond the transfer window. This sentiment was reiterated following the departure of Eberechi Eze, who transferred to Arsenal in a $91M deal last week.

After Guehi scored in the 3-0 victory over Aston Villa on Sunday, Glasner stated: "We have to (keep Guehi) if we want to play a successful season... we need Marc.

"It is not possible within one day to find a replacement who can play immediately in the Premier League. When you see our defensive set-up, this is our foundation, everybody knows exactly what he has to do, everybody can rely on each other. Marc isn't a small part in this, he's our captain.

"We have to keep him. I told this to the chairman. It's not for me."

Liverpool.com says: The groundwork is now firmly laid by Liverpool, and Guehi knows a move to a Champions League club is there for him now - it's just a question of when he gets it.

The Reds will of course have the added advantage now of not having to pay as much as they would have had to fork out had they signed the defender on deadline day, although there could of course be some new hurdles now.

Guehi potentially being available for free in less than a year will be a very attractive prospect for a lot of top teams - possibly some foreign ones, who will be able to discuss a pre-contract agreement with him from the start of 2026, unlike Premier League sides. If Liverpool is to go after him again, it might have to get in as early as it can.
