Paris Saint-Germain is reportedly advancing on a new contract for Bradley Barcola, who has been linked with Liverpool in recent times.
Barcola was part of the PSG side that won the Champions League last season, and has emerged as one of the most exciting young forwards in Europe.
Liverpool was in the market for a new left-sided forward in the summer, with Luis Diaz moving on to a new club, and Barcola was among the players linked with a switch to Anfield.
Ultimately, Liverpool neglected to sign a left-sided forward, although Hugo Ekitike and Alexander Isak are both forwards who tend to drift out to the left flank during games.
Cody Gakpo has occupied that role for much of the campaign so far, although he is yet to rediscover his best form.
Unfortunately for Liverpool, due to Diaz's departure, the Reds do not have an experienced, genuine alternative to Gakpo following Diaz's switch to Bayern Munich.
Rio Ngumoha has figured several times and scored a memorable winner against Newcastle in August, but having only turned 17 years old a few weeks ago, he cannot be expected to play an important role this season.
Liverpool's interest in Barcola did not progress to an advanced stage this summer, and in any case, it was reported that he had no intention of leaving PSG.
And now it sounds as though he is likely to sign an improved extension with the Parisian club. His current deal expires in 2028, so PSG is under no great pressure to tie him down, but it is on the agenda nonetheless, according to L'Equipe.
Meanwhile, reports in Germany say that Liverpool could make a move to sign Nico Schlotterbeck from Borussia Dortmund.
Bild says that Liverpool views the 25-year-old center-back as a possible long-term replacement for Virgil van Dijk, who is 34 years old.
Schlotterbeck is contracted to Dortmund until 2027, but it is apparently unlikely that he will extend his stay with the Bundesliga club, despite Dortmund being keen to tie him to fresh terms until 2030. Liverpool has reportedly held initial talks with the player's representatives.
The Reds are keen to sign a new center-back after missing out on Marc Guehi on deadline day during the summer transfer window.
Guehi is set to become available as a free agent next year, as is Bayern Munich defender Dayot Upamecano, who Liverpool has also been linked with, and Schlotterbeck can now seemingly be added to that list of targets.
