Liverpool vs Atletico Madrid is expected to go ahead on Wednesday night despite awful weather conditions in the north west of England. After a summer which saw very little rainfall in the region, extremely wet and windy conditions have returned over the last few days.
Liverpool began the week under a yellow weather warning from the Met Office but that has since subsided, although heavy rain and strong winds are still forecast in the coming days. There is no suggestion, though, that Liverpool's Champions League opener against Atletico is currently at risk of not taking place.
Liverpool last saw a game postponed last season when the Merseyside derby at Goodison Park, scheduled to take place in December 2024, was postponed due to concerns over Storm Darragh.
The Reds' meeting with Manchester United in January was also under threat due to heavy snow on Merseyside but the game ended up going ahead.
Liverpool goes into the game against Atletico Madrid having won all of four of its matches in the Premier League so far this season.
Alexander Isak could make his debut against the Spanish club after missing Sunday's win over Burnley, as Arne Slot looks to manage the minutes of the Premier League's most expensive signing of all time carefully.
Isak did not play at all for Newcastle in pre-season as he went on strike in a bid to force through his move to Liverpool.
“He (Isak) did recovery [today],” Liverpool head coach Slot said after the win over Burnley. “He had a hard and tough session yesterday. It’s not that difficult to understand.
“If you start the season when the players have been off for three, four, five weeks, you give them a certain base and a lot of good sessions before they are able to play 45 minutes at the end of the week.
“We got him from Newcastle in a state where his pre-season is going to start now. He needs proper minutes of training before he has a certain base, let alone for him to play twice in three days.
“We try to prepare players at the beginning of the season to play once a week and then we try to do more and more before we go into the rhythm of two games a week so they are ready from that schedule.
“Now, Alex is far from ready for that schedule of three games a week, 90 minutes. Today, we could have used him for five minutes and ten on Wednesday, but we don’t believe that is the way to build him up.”
