Liverpool hosts bottom-placed Wolves at Anfield on Saturday, with the visitors looking to avoid the worst winless start in Premier League history

Liverpool's title defense this season has admittedly been less than stellar, with the Reds currently languishing in fifth place in the Premier League table as we approach the campaign's halfway mark. A six-match unbeaten streak across all competitions in December has seen them regain some ground, but they still lag behind league leaders Arsenal by 10 points due to a string of nine losses in 12 games.

This run of form had put Arne Slot under mounting pressure, despite guiding Liverpool to the title in his debut season at the helm. However, the chatter has since significantly subsided as the Reds have started to turn things around.

The same cannot be said for Wolverhampton Wanderers ahead of their trip to Anfield on Saturday, with Liverpool's own challenges this season seeming minor in comparison.

The West Midlands side are rooted to the bottom of the Premier League table and, with a meagre two points, have yet to secure a top-flight victory this season. The only triumphs have come in the League Cup, against West Ham United and Everton, while their last win dates back to April 26 when they thrashed relegated Leicester City 3-0.

As a result, since the beginning of May, they've endured a 21-match winless streak in the league and have only managed to scrape points at home against Brentford on the final day of last season, and away at Tottenham Hotspur and at home to Brighton and Hove Albion this year.

The solitary point at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium is the only time they've managed to avoid defeat on their travels this season, across all competitions, with their last away victory dating back to April at Manchester United. With Wolves heading to Anfield on a losing streak of 11 consecutive matches, it would be a significant blow for Liverpool if they failed to overcome the Premier League strugglers next weekend.

Indeed, another loss for the West Midlands team would set a new record for the worst winless start to a Premier League season. Wolves' poor form led to the dismissal of Vitor Pereira in early November, with Middlesbrough boss and former player Rob Edwards stepping into the role.

However, still without a single point and his team languishing 16 points from safety, it's already looking like a monumental task for him to orchestrate a 'great escape'. Adding to the turmoil, beleaguered chairman Jeff Shi resigned from his position last week amidst ongoing backlash from supporters.

Admittedly, Wolves' struggles were not helped by their summer transfer window, which saw key players Matheus Cunha and Rayan Ait-Nouri leave for Manchester United and Man City respectively.

Understandably, this hasn't halted speculation about player departures. With the threat of relegation to the Championship looming, it seems likely that more key players will follow Cunha and Ait-Nouri out the door.

The same could be said for former Liverpool transfer target Andre Trindade. Liverpool showed interest in the Brazilian back in the summer of 2023 when looking to bolster its midfield, but shifted focus to Wataru Endo after Fluminense made it clear the midfielder wouldn't be allowed to leave until the end of the year.

Andre eventually joined Wolves in a deal worth up to $28M (£21m) in August 2024 and made a strong impression in his debut season at Molineux. Both Liverpool and Manchester United continued to be linked with him until last summer.

While such transfer chatter has died down amidst Wolves' current struggles, Andre would still be one of their most coveted assets - particularly if they were to be relegated. With 2026 being a World Cup year, and the midfielder having only made one appearance for Brazil since March 2025, he might be more inclined to consider a mid-season exit.

At present, there's no indication that the Reds are considering reigniting their interest in the Brazilian. However, given their occasional struggles this season, there have been calls for Liverpool to bolster their defensive midfield options.

Hypothetically speaking, if the Reds were still interested in Andre, it wouldn't be the first time they've revisited a former target, with Mohamed Salah being the most successful example of such a move.

They've also had considerable success when recruiting from relegated teams in recent years, with Andy Robertson, Gini Wijnaldum, Xherdan Shaqiri and Danny Ings all being signed following their respective teams' demotions to the Championship.

Being ever opportunistic in the transfer market, Liverpool could see Wolves' current predicament as another potential opportunity. For now, Andre and Wolves will be aiming to avoid setting an unwanted Premier League record at Anfield on Saturday.

With the transfer window fast approaching and Doherty's stern words echoing around Molineux, it remains to be seen whether a clash with the Reds is also viewed as a potential shop window.
