It's quiet on the Liverpool transfer front beyond the Jeremie Jacquet signing, but anything could happen in the closing hours of the window amid the Reds' need for defensive reinforcements

Liverpool's swoop for Jeremy Jacquet seemingly came out of nowhere – and it is a development that shows that anything can happen in the transfer window.
The Reds have committed $82 million to the deal to bring Jacquet to Anfield during the upcoming summer transfer window, and he will be a much-needed addition in an area of the pitch that is facing some uncertainty.
However, considering that Jacquet will not move to Liverpool until the end of the season, many observers are wondering whether there could be another signing on the cards that could have a more immediate impact on the team.

But Reds fans know from experience that big signings can come out of nowhere.
The Jacquet deal is, of course, the most recent example, but the most dramatic example remains the saga involving Fernando Torres on January deadline day in 2011.
Torres secured a move to Chelsea on deadline day and Liverpool immediately used the funds to sign Andy Carroll and Luis Suarez, in one of the most dramatic transfer deadline days in history.

The deadline is not quite as late in the day as it was then, so Liverpool will have to get a hurry on if it wants to reinforce the squad before the 7pm GMT deadline, but there are still a few hours to go.
Meanwhile, the details surrounding Jacquet's impending move to Liverpool have emerged.
A fee of £55 million ($75 million), plus an additional £5 million ($7 million), has been agreed with Rennes for the center-back’s transfer, and he was due on Merseyside on Monday to undergo his medical.
Jacquet has agreed a contract that will run until 2031, and his arrival is in keeping with Liverpool’s transfer policy of targeting young defenders, who can be mainstays in the team for years to come.
That was seen with the summer acquisition of Giovanni Leoni, who sustained a season-ending knee injury last September
Virgil van Dijk, Ibrahima Konate and Joe Gomez are nearing a combined 24 years of service, and all three players are facing uncertain long-term futures at the club.
Konate is out of contract at the end of the season, while Van Dijk and Gomez are only contracted to the Reds until 2027.
