Lucas Bergvall broke a little-known Premier League rule in Tottenham’s 2-2 draw against Brighton, with the Spurs man being lucky to escape without punishment.
Tottenham Hotspur played out an entertaining 2-2 draw with the Seagulls on Saturday, battling their way back from two goals down to salvage a point.
On the balance of play, the Spurs players would have been disappointed not to win the game, and that appears to be the sentiment in the dressing room, with Joao Palhinha insisting that Tottenham should have taken three points from the Amex Stadium.
However, it turns out that there was a small incident in the first-half where the referee failed to follow the law and punish a Spurs midfielder.
Lucas Bergvall broke Premier League rule in Brighton vs Tottenham
The incident occurred when Tottenham won a corner in the first period, with the 19-year-old sprinting from the back post to the near post before it was taken.
However, he decided to do that by running behind the Brighton goal instead of across the front, and this was spotted by referee Chris Kavanagh, who halted play to have a word with the midfielder.
The Express have now revealed that Law 11 of the FA rulebook used by English top-flight officials states: “A player who deliberately leaves the field of play and re-enters without the referee’s permission and is not penalised for offside and gains an advantage, must be cautioned.”
Kavanagh failed to brandish the yellow card, meaning Bergvall was lucky to escape punishment.
Spurs are putting more and more emphasis on set-pieces
We know that Tottenham are meticulous in the way they prepare for set-pieces, planning out the strategy depending on the strengths and weaknesses of each opposition.
That was in evidence a little over a week ago as several Spurs players pointed to the set-piece coach Andreas Georgson after Pape Sarr converted from a corner against West Ham.
One would thus expect Frank and his staff to have a word with Bergvall and make it clear to him that he could be booked if he leaves the field of play during corner kicks.
