Lucas Bergvall made his first-ever Champions League appearance for Tottenham in the win over Villarreal, and after catching the eye with his performance, the teenager has spoken out about the iconic moment.
Thomas Frank’s Tottenham side continues to go from strength to strength, with their latest triumph coming in the UEFA Champions League tie against Villarreal.
It was not the prettiest of victories, yet it was enough for Tottenham to collect all three points, with a Luiz Junior own goal proving to be the difference between the two sides on the night.
The tie also saw several Tottenham players and staff experience their first taste of Champions League football, with Lucas Bergvall and Thomas Frank both making debuts in the competition, but it was the young midfielder who stood out as his dangerous cross forced the error that led to the decisive opener.
Lucas Bergvall reflects on Tottenham debut in Champions League
After the game, Lucas Bergvall spoke to Tottenham’s official channels, reflecting on the contest and the challenge Villarreal posed.
He admitted it was not straightforward, saying: “Really tough game, I think Villarreal did a great job, but a 1-0 win and a clean sheet, so amazing feeling.”
He then opened up about just how much it meant to finally step into the Champions League spotlight, having dreamt of this moment since childhood. “Yeah, it has been a dream since I was a young kid to play here and in front of the supporters at home, and a win could not be better,” he said.
Bergvall also gave his thoughts on the level of the game compared to previous challenges, insisting Tottenham showed their strength. “Yeah, I think Villarreal did a good game, but at the same time, we were better. They do not have a shot on target today, so says a lot about us and this season, yeah.”
The teenager added more on his personal journey, referencing the setbacks of last year in Europe. “Yeah, I really struggled with that to get an injury last season. I need to be with the team and support them and we went to win the Europa League, so to play today was an unbelievable feeling. I said crazy.”
Reflecting on the cross that led to the own goal, Bergvall joked about the strange feeling of celebrating before realising it was not his strike. “I tried to do a celebration and then I went ah, it is not my goal, so I just started to jog. It was half celebration,” he told Spurs’ official channels.
He also explained how he is handling his progression, making clear that nothing has changed in his daily routine other than a relentless drive to improve. “I just try to work hard every day to get better, to listen to the coaching staff to get better, to look at videos, analyse everything to keep going.
“I am not done yet, we have a new game on Saturday, so today we enjoy and wake tomorrow and go again, yeah.”
When asked about who in the coaching staff he works with most closely, Bergvall stressed that it is a collective effort. “Everyone, I think everyone has done a great job for the team to be better and better, and you can see this season we have a lot of good games, we just need to keep going.”
He also touched on the support of the crowd and Tottenham’s increasing threat from set pieces. “Yeah, it feels amazing. I still always do all the support, and I said we are becoming more and more with us, it is just great, hopefully we can score more goals.”
