Luis Diaz breaks silence after Liverpool exit as Bayern Munich transfer confirmed

2 weeks ago 72

Luis Diaz has spoken for the first time since leaving Liverpool after completing his move to Bayern Munich.

The winger’s transfer to the German champion was confirmed on Wednesday, with the Reds reaching an $88 million agreement with Bayern following talks.

Liverpool had been adamant that Diaz was not for sale earlier in the summer, having knocked back previous approaches from Bayern and Barcelona. The club relented though earlier this week after being presented with a second bid from the Bundesliga giant, with Diaz leaving the Reds’ tour of Asia on Monday in order to fly to Germany and complete his move.

The 28-year-old was seen arriving in Munich on Tuesday ahead of his medical, and has since gone on to sign a four-year deal with Bayern.

"I'm very happy, it means a lot to me to be part of FC Bayern - they're one of the biggest clubs in the world,” Diaz said after signing for the club.

“I want to help my new team with my way of playing football and my character. My goal is to win every possible title, and that's what we'll work for every day as a team."

Diaz leaves Liverpool having scored 41 goals for the club since his arrival from Porto in January 2022, and having played a big role in last season’s Premier League title win under Arne Slot.

The Colombian had been linked with an exit last year before speculation grew again this summer, with Diaz informing Liverpool of his desire to move on.

He was left out of the Reds’ pre-season games against Preston, Stoke and AC Milan before a deal was completed earlier this week, with Liverpool set to gain a profit of around $30M on what it paid Porto three-and-a-half years ago.

Speaking about the signing, Bayern CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen said: "In Luis Díaz, we have succeeded in bringing in one of the best left wingers in the Premier League.

“He brings real player character from Liverpool to FC Bayern - he's won silverware with every one of his clubs to date. As a team, we were able to work together to realise this transfer in a targeted manner and are delighted to have a top international who will give our team important impetus and also enrich the Bundesliga.

“We would like to thank Liverpool for what were fair and serious negotiations at all times."
