Two possible alternatives have emerged to Lutsharel Geertruida as Liverpool looks to wrap up a deal before the end of the transfer window.

The Netherlands international could be on his way to Anfield, with the Reds in talks with RB Leipzig and Sunderland about taking him on loan for the remainder of the season.

Geertruida is currently on a season-long loan with Sunderland, meaning the Black Cats would have to agree to terminate the deal first before Liverpool could make the signing, which could present some problems, and as such, the Reds are keeping their options open ahead of deadline day.

Liverpool.com understands that there is an acceptance that it is a complicated deal to get done, and that Geertruida is one of a few options under consideration from Liverpool, with two names having now emerged as potential alternatives.

One of them, according to The Athletic’s David Ornstein, is Inter Milan’s Denzel Dumfries. The 29-year-old has been linked with a move to Anfield in recent days, alongside the reports touting Curtis Jones with a move in the opposite direction.

Both Dumfries and Jones are mentioned in accordance with Geertruida by Ornstein, suggesting that Liverpool could be eyeing up a deal involving the two as an alternative, although it is also revealed that it is less likely.

Denzel Dumfries of Internazionale looks on prior to the Serie A match between FC Internazionale and Udinese Calcio at Giuseppe Meazza Stadium on August 31, 2025 in Milan, Italy.

Another name has also been linked, with Sacha Tavolieri claiming that Galatasaray’s Roland Sallai is also under consideration should Sunderland block a deal for Geertruida.

Despite the alternative options being discussed, Liverpool’s attempts to sign Geertruida do appear to be heading in the right direction, with Ornstein having given the deal a “75%” chance of going through.

Indeed, Sky Germany’s Florian Plettenberg reports that a full agreement has been reached with the defender, and that Leipzig is set to give the green light on the deal.

Liverpool is therefore in direct contact with Sunderland now, with the Stadium of Light club looking to secure its own replacement, as well as compensation for Geertruida’s loan being cut short.

The 25-year-old has made 17 league appearances since joining the Black Cats on loan last summer, including 10 starts.

News of a potential move to Liverpool comes after Arne Slot hinted that the Reds could be about to dip into the market for their first major signing of the window.

“I think there’s always a lot of talk about Liverpool and Liverpool players,” Slot said after Saturday’s win over Newcastle.

“There was a lot of noise around the club the last week or should I say weeks, but today our fans showed what noise really means. That is being loud, they were so helpful today, that is what noise here is in Liverpool.

“We are trying to strengthen the squad and not trying to weaken it. But yeah, 48-72 hours to go, let us see where the window ends up.”
