Wrexham are set to complete the permanent signing of Manchester City defender Callum Doyle for a fee that could rise to £8million.

The sale is another feather in the cap for City's academy, banking an impressive fee for a player who has racked up plenty of Championship experience without ever quite breaking into the side at the Etihad.

Hoffenheim had a £6.5million bid for Doyle turned down at the start of the summer, but with the clock ticking on the window, Wrexham made an enquiry over a £2million deal recently, only to see that move rebuffed by City.

The two clubs have since agreed to a deal that will reach £8million, and Doyle is keen to sign for the Championship new boys, who have again signalled their ambition in this transfer window.

Wrexham have secured three successive promotions under Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney's ownership. Last week, they broke their transfer record by signing Nathan Broadhead from Ipswich for £10million. Although they have lost their first two games back in the second tier, they continue to invest to try and fund another promotion charge.

Doyle will bring plenty of Championship experience to the Racecourse Ground. He has spent the last four years out on loan and after a campaign with Sunderland in League One, the last three seasons have been in the Championship with Coventry, Leicester and Norwich, making 112 appearances at that level.

The sale of Doyle will bring City's incomings from the sale of academy graduates to around £70million this summer. James McAtee joined Nottingham Forest for £30million and Yan Couto made his loan move to Borussia Dortmund permanent for a fee of around £25million.

Winger Farid Alfa-Ruprecht returned to Germany to sign for Bayer Leverkusen for £5million and Jacob Wright made a permanent switch to Norwich for £2.3million.
