Manchester City has announced plans to pay tribute to British boxing legend Ricky Hatton ahead of the Manchester derby, with Micah Richards and Roy Keane paying an emotional tribute.
Hatton, a beloved figure in British boxing, was found dead at his home on Sunday (14 September). His death is not being treated as suspicious, according to Greater Manchester Police.
A spokesperson from GMP stated: "Officers were called by a member of the public to attend Bowlacre Road, Hyde, Tameside, at 6:45am today where they found the body of a 46 year old man. In an official statement, City expressed their sorrow ahead of the derby against United: "Manchester City is devastated to learn Ricky Hatton has passed away, aged 46.
"Ricky was one of City's most loved and revered supporters, who will always be remembered for a glittering boxing career that saw him win world titles at welterweight and light-welterweight.
"Everyone at the Club would like to send our heartfelt condolences to his family and friends at this difficult time. We can confirm there will be a minute's appreciation ahead of today's game against Manchester United."
As reported by the Daily Mail, both teams will also wear black armbands during the match.
Known as 'The Hitman', Hatton was a fervent City supporter, often seen wearing sky blue shorts and using 'Blue Moon' as his walkout song throughout his career.In 2008, he achieved one of his lifelong dreams when he fought Juan Lazcano at the Etihad Stadium.
Former City skipper Vincent Kompany took to social media to honor the Hitman, posting a photo of them with Liam Gallagher and writing: "We'll miss you Ricky. Our thoughts are with the family and friends. Rest in peace legend."
Jack Grealish, on loan at Everton from City, posted his own tribute to Hatton on social media on Sunday.
He wrote: "RIP legend. Such sad news. An absolute diamond every time I met him! My thoughts go out to his family and friends. RIP Hitman."
At the time of his passing, Hatton was preparing for a comeback against Dubai's first-ever professional boxer Eisa Al Dah. His poignant final social media posts showed him training for the match with his son, Campbell Hatton.
