Manchester City sealed their 17th Premier League win, having overcome Newcastle United at the Etihad Stadium
Manchester City clinched a significant 2-1 victory over Newcastle United in the Premier League, ahead of Sunday's north London derby between Arsenal and Tottenham.
Nico O'Reilly bagged a brace in the first half, while Lewis Hall pulled one back. Dan Burn thought he had scored after heading the ball into the net, but he had been pushed into an offside position in the build‑up. The result closes the gap between City and leaders Arsenal to just two points as things stand.
Arsenal will have the chance to extend their lead to five points if Mikel Arteta's side beat Spurs. A draw would put them three points clear of City, while a defeat would maintain the two‑point gap.
Meanwhile, third‑placed Aston Villa drew 1-1 with Leeds United at home on Saturday afternoon. Anton Stach scored the opening goal at Villa Park, while January signing Tammy Abraham rescued a point in the 88th minute.
With the Premier League title race firmly between Pep Guardiola's side and the Gunners, the next few weeks are set to be be crucial for both teams.
