The City Football Group have benefitted from Bryan Mbeumo's move to Manchester United

Manchester United's £71million deal to sign Bryan Mbeumo from Brentford is good news for a club in the City Football Group (CFG) portfolio.

United will pay an initial £65million for Mbeumo, with a further £6million in add-ons depending on how the 25-year-old performs at Old Trafford.

The deal is good news for the Bees, who have achieved their asking price for a player who scored 20 Premier League goals last season, but it will also benefit the ownership group behind Manchester City.

Mbeumo came through the ranks at French club Troyes before joining Brentford for £5.8million in August 2019. In addition to that fee, the club inserted several clauses into the deal that have paid dividends six years on.

Troyes have since come under the ownership of CFG and as they seek to rebuild after a difficult couple of years on the pitch, they have been boosted by the sell-on clause in the deal that took Mbeumo to West London.

According to local publication L’Est-éclair, the Ligue 2 side will receive €7.4million (£6.4million) as a result of that sell-on, as well as €2million (£1.7million) in training compensation and solidarity payments as set out in FIFA's transfer rules.

The €9.4million payment will be a welcome bonus to the side that finished 10th in Ligue 2 last season. Before the start of last season, they were only saved from successive relegations and a spell in France's regional third tier by the administrative relegation of Bordeaux.

CFG became majority owners in September 2020, and there have been protests against them during that time, but the profit banked from the Mbeumo deal could help them push for promotion back to Ligue 1 this season.

CFG have total or partial ownership of 13 clubs worldwide, including five in Europe, New York City FC, three in South America, Melbourne City in Australia and three in the Far East.
