Some Manchester City players may have been denied a Carabao Cup winners medal due to EFL rules on the number that can be handed out. City won the trophy for the ninth time thanks to a 2-0 win over Arsenal.

After a cagey first half, City took control of the match in the second half, Nico O’Reilly took advantage of a mistake from Arsenal goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga to put his side ahead in the 60th minute.

It got better for City and O’Reilly just four minutes later when he scored his second of the game to put Pep Guardiola’s side in complete control. The side were able to comfortably see out the game to claim the first silverware of the season.

The win could be a big psychological boost to City, ahead of the final games of the season. They currently sit nine points behind Arsenal at the top of the Premier League table.

The final whistle prompted celebrations from the City squad on the pitch and they soon made their way up to the royal box to collect both their medals and the trophy.

While they made their way up with their teammates, there were some members of the squad who came away without medals. That’s due to EFL rule 20.2.

It states: "In addition to the Cup, the Management Committee shall present thirty souvenirs to the winning Club in the Final Tie; and thirty souvenirs to the losing Club in the Final Tie.

"Additional souvenirs may be presented with the consent of the Management Committee but shall be at the cost of the requesting Club."

There were a few players joining the celebrations on the pitch without medals around their neck, they included defender Marc Guehi.

The centre-back was not eligible to play in the final due to joining the club after the first leg of the semi-final.

Guardiola urged City to appeal to the EFL in an attempt to make Guehi eligible for the second leg of the semi-final, but that was rejected. The defender was therefore forced to watch the final two games from the stands.
