Manchester City have bowed out of the Champions League after failing to overturn a first leg deficit against Real Madrid

Manchester City have been knocked out of the Champions League after being beaten 5-1 on aggregate by Real Madrid at the Etihad Stadium. Pep Guardiola's side lost 3-0 in Madrid last week and knew they had an uphill task ahead of them on home soil.

The match turned sour in the 20th minute when Bernardo Silva was sent off after being adjudged to have handled the ball and denied Vinicius Junior a clear goal‑scoring opportunity. The incident was initially flagged for offside, but after a lengthy VAR review no offside was detected, resulting in Silva receiving the first red card of his career and Madrid being awarded a penalty in the 20th minute.

Vinicius made no mistake from the spot to put the visitors in front, and although Erling Haaland later levelled the score on the night, City struggled to get anywhere near overturning the deficit. Vinicius then added his second deep into stoppage time.

Across all competitions, City are still fighting for the Premier League, the Carabao Cup and the FA Cup. Arsenal, meanwhile, have progressed to the quarter‑finals after beating Bayer Leverkusen, setting up a tie against Sporting Clube de Portugal.
