Man City signing Antoine Semenyo is repeat of classic transfer move

Manchester City dipped into the transfer market last year after a poor run of form, and the Blues have signed Antoine Semenyo after a winless start to 2026

Manchester City has completed the signing of Antoine Semenyo from Bournemouth, bolstering Pep Guardiola's attack for the second half of the season.

The Ghana international has been one of the Premier League's most productive players this term, registering 10 goals and three assists in the top flight – with four of those goals coming in his final six appearances for Bournemouth.

Semenyo's arrival will add a new dimension to the City attack, and it comes at the perfect time as far as City is concerned after a run of three successive draws for Pep Guardiola's team.

City made a similar move last year as the Manchester club strengthened its squad with the addition of several players in response to a poor run of form in the first half of the season.

The Blues moved into the market to sign Omar Marmoush, Nico Gonzalez, Abdukodir Khusanov and Vitor Reis in a bid to rescue their 2024-25 season.

Their plight isn't quite so bad this time around – they trail Arsenal by just six points in the league table – but the Semenyo move is designed to boost their chances of chasing the Gunners down.

City is hardly short of options in attack, with Rayan Cherki, Phil Foden, Jeremy Doku and Savinho all options for the wide spots in the Blues' team, and were all four of those players thriving, it feels unlikely that this move for Semenyo would have happened.

Explaining his decision to join City, Semenyo said: “I mean you want to be a part of the team, to be honest.

“You want to be winning those trophies, you want to be playing with the best players in the world, so that perception is that you just want to be involved.

“I thank God that now I’m involved and we can win many more trophies.”

He added: “I’ve still got a lot of learning to do and joining City is going to be the best thing for my development.

“The best coaches, [and] the best players will take my game to the next level. I feel I’m improving but there are so many young players here who I think will be top players. I want to be part of that, and I want to rewrite history again.”
