Man City stars in agreement on Marc Guehi as Liverpool faces transfer battle for defender

3 hours ago 3

Liverpool will face stiff competition from Manchester City as the Reds attempt to sign Marc Guehi in 2026.

Guehi looked set to join Liverpool at the start of the season after Palace agreed to sell its captain on transfer deadline day, only to make a U-turn at the 11th hour due to Oliver Glasner's concerns that his captain departing would leave Palace light in defense.

Considering Guehi will be available for free at the end of the season, Liverpool is well aware that it won't have the free run at Guehi in 2026 that it seemed to have earlier this year.

As well as European heavyweights like Real Madrid and Barcelona, the Premier League's dominant club over the last decade is reportedly interested in signing Guehi.

The Times says that City has closely monitored Guehi over the last few years after he "caught the eye" of City's director of football, Txiki Begiristain.

If Guehi were to make the move to the Etihad Stadium, he would link up with some of his England teammates.

Phil Foden and John Stones both went to Euro 2024 with Guehi, and both men sang his praises during a tournament that saw the 25-year-old establish himself as a regular for his country for the first time.

"For him to come in, not having felt the kind of feelings around tournament football before or these kind of games, all the different emotions that come with it that you've never experienced before, he has handled them so well in his performances," Stones said during the group phase.

Guehi and Phil Foden could be teammates next season

"I said to him: 'When we're in this, whoever we're playing with, I'm your right arm, you're my left, we do this together - I've got your back.' He's bought into that.

"I believe massively, in partnerships, that you do it all together. He's handled the occasion so well and I've really enjoyed playing with him."

Foden also spoke highly of Guehi, specifically praising his leadership skills during the defender's first appearance at a major international tournament.

"He has been a leader," Foden told England's official YouTube channel. "I know him well from obviously playing with him and he's not fazed by anything. I feel like he has come into the team and shown his qualities."
