Erling Haaland faces his old club as sixth faces seventh in Wednesday’s Champions League clash at the Etihad Stadium, as Manchester City welcome German heavyweights Borussia Dortmund. Both teams have earned an impressive seven points from their opening three matches, but Dortmund edge ahead in the 36-team league-phase standings thanks to a slightly better goal difference.
Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City have navigated a tough start to their European campaign, taking on Napoli, Monaco, and Villarreal, and emerging with a respectable seven points. The Sky Blues recorded 2-0 victories over both Napoli and Villarreal, with a thrilling 2-2 draw against Monaco sandwiched in between. While City have found the net in every game, their total of six goals is the lowest among the top 12 teams in the standings.
Despite this, City’s current seventh-place position would be enough for automatic qualification to the last 16, and they have recently found their rhythm domestically, bouncing back from a painful defeat at Aston Villa with back-to-back 3-1 wins over Swansea City and Bournemouth. Erling Haaland continued his prolific form with a brace against Bournemouth, joining two Liverpool legends in an exclusive Premier League goalscoring club and helping City reclaim second spot in the table, though they remain six points adrift of leaders Arsenal.
Turning their attention back to Europe, City boast an outstanding home record against German opposition, having won each of their last 11 competitive matches at the Etihad against Bundesliga sides. They have also never lost at home to Dortmund. However, maintaining that perfect record could prove challenging, as Niko Kovac’s Dortmund have been in scintillating attacking form in this season’s Champions League, scoring at least four goals in every group game so far.
After a dramatic 4-4 draw with Juventus and a 4-1 victory over Athletic Bilbao, Dortmund netted another four goals in a 4-2 win at Copenhagen, with Felix Nmecha bagging a brace and Jobe Bellingham providing two assists. This run marks the first time in the club’s history that they have scored four goals in three consecutive European Cup/Champions League matches. Their 12-goal tally is the joint second-highest in the league phase, level with Bayern Munich and just one behind Paris Saint-Germain.
Interestingly, Dortmund’s domestic form has been less explosive, managing just one goal in each of their last three matches against Koln, Eintracht Frankfurt, and Augsburg—though those single strikes were enough to secure victory in all three, including a penalty shootout win over Frankfurt in the DFB-Pokal after a 1-1 draw.
The 2023-24 Champions League runners-up have also scored in every away game this European campaign, and have found the net on all three of their previous visits to the Etihad. However, their last two trips to Manchester ended in narrow 2-1 defeats. Dortmund will be aiming to break that pattern and continue their impressive scoring streak, while City look to preserve their formidable home record against German sides.
