Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney has hailed Carlos Alcaraz after he defeated Jannik Sinner 6-2, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 to lift his sixth Grand Slam of his career and his second US Open title.

Alcaraz, who leaves the final Grand Slam of the year as champion, has reclaimed his place as the world No.1 replacing the Italian at the top of the rankings. The final in New York City had been delayed after President Donald Trump's arrival at the Arthur Ashe Stadium required increased security measures.

Trump was both booed and cheered during the national anthem when he was shown on the big screen. The boos then became louder until the camera cut away.

When the action did commence, both men put on a show as their rivalry on the court continues to blossom. This was the third Grand Slam of the year where these two athletes have met each other in the final.

First was at Roland Garros where Alcaraz was triumphant in five sets. Sinner managed to get his revenge in his own five set thrilling victory at Wimbledon in July.

The trilogy completion was a more defining victory and left one particular sporting legend impressed. Taking to Instagram after the match, Rooney simply posted: "Incredible talent," while sharing a picture of Alcaraz celebrating.

Sky has slashed the price of its Essential TV and Sky Sports bundle for the 2025/26 season, saving members £336 and offering more than 1,400 live matches across the Premier League, EFL and more.

Sky will show at least 215 live Premier League games this season, an increase of up to 100 more.

Rooney was not the only Manchester-affiliated football icon keenly watching the final last night. Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola, currently in the midst of the September international break, was a keen observer of the contest in New York.

Guardiola has previously spoken of his admiration for tennis stars. He claimed that he took inspiration for City's dominance from the likes of Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic.

Speaking recently about those at the top of the game in tennis, Guardiola added: "There is one detail that defines them, it is how hard they work. People believing when you are on top of any sport, it is [due to] talents and skills.

"But what would define [them] is they work harder than the other ones, they prepare better than the other ones. They are the best.

"They are never satisfied and how they accept the bad moments or the defeats like it's normal in life, in a sport and how to win the games and how they accept they are nervous or they are playing bad, how they come back immediately." Guardiola will undoubtedly be flying back to England soon as he turns his attention to this weekend's derby against United at the Etihad Stadium.
