Liverpool fans will have been taken aback by a surprise report which emerged on Monday linking Alexis Mac Allister with a shock move to Manchester United.

It's been almost 90 years since a player moved directly from Liverpool to United – and it would still be a major surprise were the Argentine leave Merseyside for Old Trafford during the offseason.

Mac Allister is contracted to Liverpool until 2028, and he has started 21 of Liverpool's 26 Premier League games so far this season, which suggests that Reds boss Arne Slot still very much sees him as a part of his plans.

However, he has not shown anything close to his best form this term, leading to speculation around his future on Merseyside.

Fierce rival United is said to have Mac Allister on a list of midfield targets for the summer, and that list also features three highly rated young Premier League midfielders.

Carlos Baleba of Brighton is having a disappointing season, but the 22-year-old is still said to be on United's radar, while England pair Elliott Anderson, 23, and Adam Wharton, 22, are also under consideration by the Red Devils.

Meanwhile, Mac Allister has, in fairness, played a part in the mini-revival of Liverpool's season in recent weeks.

Liverpool has won four of its last five games in all competitions, and earlier this month, he spoke to club media about the reasons behind the team's upturn in form.

"We feel like we are in a good moment, in a much better moment than the beginning of the season," Mac Allister told Liverpoolfc.com.

"We are improving as a team – which is the most important thing – and now we're looking forward to this amazing game.

"The manager had a really good meeting where he said that we needed to improve in both boxes. That's what we wanted and I think we showed it in the last two games.

"But we were more aggressive, we pressed a little bit more. That's what we want and that's what we want to get and be consistent on that. I think it's going to be key.

"We have many players that are injured, so it's not that easy, but we are getting there. I think we are all happy with our last two performances.

"We played against two teams that were a little bit more aggressive and tried to build from the back, which is for us maybe better. We are in a good moment but we need to keep working and keep improving."
