Stefan Ortega looks set to stay at Manchester City for the first half of this season

Andre Onana's move to Turkish Super Lig side Trabzonspor from Manchester United could mean goalkeeper Stefan Ortega remains at Manchester City until at least January.

Ortega had been widely expected to leave the Etihad this summer after the Blues paid £27million to sign James Trafford from Burnley in July. When City matched Newcastle's bid for the 22-year-old, the plan was for the former academy youngster to challenge Ederson, with Ortega departing.

But Ederson's own exit to Fenerbahce led to City signing Gianluigi Donnarumma from Paris St-Germain for £26million. Donnarumma and Trafford are now competing to be No. 1 under Pep Guardiola.

Ortega's departure was complicated by an injury to third-choice Marcus Bettinelli. This meant the German was on the bench on the opening day of the season at Wolves and was part of the squad against Tottenham and Brighton despite not being among the substitutes.

The 32-year-old reportedly turned down interest from a couple of clubs during the summer and ended up staying at City beyond the closure of the transfer window last Monday. That didn't close the door on Ortega leaving, with the window still open in Turkey and Saudi Arabia, and he was linked with Trabzonspor.

But Onana's imminent move there closes the door on that possibility, and it looks increasingly likely that Onana will stay at City, with a move potentially explored in the January window.

Ortega has made 56 appearances in three seasons at City and made a crucial save against Tottenham towards the end of the 2023/24 title-winning campaign.

His contract expires next summer and with Donnarumma and Trafford now in situ, he has dropped down the pecking order at City. Ortega was included in the Champions League squad, with Bettinelli also chosen, but his chance of game time at the Etihad looks slim.

Ortega was offered to Burnley during negotiations for Trafford, only for the Clarets to move for Martin Dubravka instead. The German's decision to remain at City is likely to end his slim chance of making Germany's squad for the World Cup next summer.
