Manuel Ugarte escaped a red card despite receiving two bookings on the pitch as the Manchester United and Uruguay midfielder went up against England on Friday
Manuel Ugarte has sent a message to Phil Foden after the Manchester United midfielder was involved in a controversial incident during Uruguay's 1-1 draw against England on Friday.
Ugarte, 24, started for his nation to earn his 35th cap and produced an all-action performance at Wembley Stadium, though the ex-Sporting CP and Paris Saint-Germain was fortunate to remain on the pitch.
He went into the book and was shown a yellow card in the 71st minute following a rash challenge on Cole Palmer. 11 minutes later, Ugarte appeared to be shown his second yellow card for dissent after England scored the opener through Ben White. However, no red card was brandished and Ugarte walked off unpunished.
Ugarte was then substituted in the 87th minute with Brian Rodriguez coming on in his absence. ITV confirmed post-match that Ugarte's first yellow had been 'rescinded' and shown to Jose Maria Gimenez for dissent to the referee.
He wasn't penalised for his foul on Palmer, with his yellow card after White's goal the only one he received. An official explanation from FIFA is still awaited.
Throughout the match, Ugarte was involved in some strong challenges. As well as conceding the foul on Palmer, Ugarte committed two further offences during the game. He made two tackles, two clearances and two interceptions, though he did win just two out of his 13 ground duels.
And on Instagram, Ugarte posted a photo of him alongside Foden after he fouled the Manchester City man. He put up a further image of him pre-match and during the national anthem.
It's safe to say England manager Thomas Tuchel was far from impressed with referee Sven Jablonski's performance, admitting it was a "bad day at the office" for the official.
"I didn't think it was a good performance at all," Tuchel said of Jablonski. "There were debates a player got two yellows in a match but not sent off. A bad day at the office [for the ref]."
"It's a very soft penalty. Of course there is contact but it's so obvious what the striker is trying to do. To overturn the decision when the ref made it clear he saw it.
"I was surprised the VAR was in place - I thought it wasn't working. The tackle on Foden not even checked. The tackle on Noni not checked. Then suddenly this one is checked."
England were leading through White's 81st minute goal before Federico Valverde scored a stoppage-time penalty to make it 1-1 and secure a draw for Uruguay.
