Marc Guehi confronts angry Crystal Palace fans after shocking FA Cup exit

Macclesfield stunned FA Cup holders Crystal Palace with a 2-1 victory in the third round on Saturday, with captain Marc Guehi fronting up to supporters after full-time

Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi confronted disappointed supporters immediately following his team's humiliating FA Cup defeat to Macclesfield.

As the reigning champions heading into the fixture, Palace suffered an embarrassing elimination at the hands of the National League North outfit on Saturday afternoon.

Captain Paul Dawson put Macclesfield in front shortly before the interval, before Isaac Buckley-Ricketts extended their lead just after the hour mark.

Palace were offered a glimmer of hope late on through Yeremy Pino, but the hosts managed to hold firm and secure one of the most remarkable upsets in FA Cup history.

Immediately after the final whistle, Eagles skipper Marc Guehi faced the wrath of the travelling support. The centre-back made his way over to the away end to hear their grievances firsthand.

Palace's third round elimination stands in sharp contrast to their most recent involvement in the competition. Eberechi Eze's strike against Manchester City at Wembley last May famously delivered the club's maiden major honour.

Whilst Palace departed with their heads bowed in shame, the opposite was true for Macclesfield, who celebrated one of the finest achievements in their club's history.

Manager John Rooney said: "I can't believe it, we never thought we would be in this position. We were incredible from the first minute. I thought we were deserved winners.

"I couldn't be any prouder of the lads. I couldn't have asked any more of them and you can see the joy in them."

Palace manager Oliver Glasner didn't mince his words after the match, stating: "We give congratulations to Macclesfield for winning. We had no kind of quality today and I saw no one who could win a dribble. Then conceding set goals and timing in the header.

"If you can't create clear chances, it is a lack of quality that we have shown today. We deserved to lose."

When questioned about the reason behind Palace's poor performance, he responded: "[Lack of] quality. From everyone. Honestly, I have no explanation for what I have seen today and we can find excuses but you don't need tactics and a manager for these games. So I think if you just show what you are capable of and show pride then you perform in a different way."

Macclesfield will now eagerly await Monday's draw to discover their fourth-round opponents. On the other hand, Palace must regroup and prepare for their upcoming Premier League encounter with Sunderland at the Stadium of Light.
