Marc Guehi has clear transfer preference as Liverpool and Newcastle poised for $53M battle

Marc Guehi would lean towards a move to Liverpool if Crystal Palace was to sell him, although no offers have been made yet for the England international. The 25-year-old defender is in the final year of his contract with Palace, who has slapped a $53 million (£40 million) price tag on him.

It was reported last month that Liverpool was leading the race for Guehi, but attention has since shifted to the attack, in particular Newcastle striker Alexander Isak. The Premier League champions have already splashed out nearly $400M (£300m) this summer and would need to fork out at least $166M (£125m) to secure Isak.

This potential record-breaking British deal could alter the course of Guehi's future. The Guardian suggests that Newcastle might reignite its interest after making four unsuccessful bids totalling $93M (£70m) last summer.

It's also noted that the England international is content at Palace and would be open to running down the last 12 months of his contract before moving to another club on a free transfer post-World Cup.

This could work in Liverpool's favour, especially as center-back Ibrahima Konate's contract also expires in June 2026 amidst rumors of a move to Real Madrid.

Newcastle isn't the only club who has previously attempted to sign Guehi. Tottenham tabled a bid for him in January, which was also turned down, and the former Chelsea prospect went on to lead the Eagles to FA Cup victory.

Sporting Lisbon's Ousmane Diomande and Inter Milan's Yann Aurel Bisseck have been touted as potential successors to Guehi at Selhurst Park.

However, Oliver Glasner would prefer to retain his captain for at least another season, given the disappointing summer transfer window.

In a candid chat with Austrian publication Kronen Zeitung, the Palace boss expressed frustration over their limited dealings, having only secured a left-back and a backup goalkeeper on a free transfer.

"Even though all the players are still here, we haven't made the most of the transfer window so far," Glasner revealed..

"I was promised that we would be more active and bring in the new players earlier this year. As of now, I have 17 outfield players. I hope we don't lose any more. If that happens and we get four new ones on deadline day like last year, another false start is possible."

Liverpool's need for defensive additions was evident in the friendly double-header against Athletic Club earlier this week.

Joe Gomez is already sidelined, with Virgil van Dijk also missing the games through illness.

It meant that Konate was the only recognized senior central defender in action, with the likes of Trey Nyoni, Andy Robertson and Wataru Endo all deputizing over the course of the two games.
