Marc Guehi has Liverpool shirt numbers to choose from if he makes January transfer

1 day ago 25

Liverpool was officially the Premier League's biggest spenders during the most recent summer transfer window. Arne Slot spent close to $600M (£446m), including add-ons, as 10 new players joined the club over a three-month period.

The final addition was Alexander Isak, who was signed from Newcastle United in a British-record deal on deadline day, following the arrivals of Florian Wirtz, Hugo Ekitike and Jeremie Frimpong, among others. The only snag in their grand scheme was the late collapse of a move for Marc Guehi.

Crystal Palace called off the central defender's proposed transfer to Liverpool in the final hours of the window, leaving that issue to be sorted out further down the line. The Reds' first chance to secure Guehi will come during the January transfer window.

This will give his club a month to find an appropriate replacement before deciding if they want to sell their captain for a nominal fee before he departs as a free agent next summer.

And that mid-season business period should also provide Slot with the opportunity to make any other adjustments he deems necessary.

Naturally, the head coach has been able to equip his squad with a revamp of the goalkeeping department, new starting full-backs, a promising young central defender, an attacking midfielder and two attackers, so he may not foresee such significant changes being required so soon.

However, all Slot can do is respond to the situation at hand. Circumstances such as an injury crisis or a player's change of heart could potentially push Liverpool back into the transfer market.

Once a fee has been agreed with clubs, personal terms have been settled with a player and all formalities of a transfer have been completed, one of the final steps is assigning the new squad number to the player.

Over the summer, Liverpool witnessed the No. 7 shirt being passed from Luis Diaz to Wirtz, and the No. 9 from Darwin Nunez to Isak.

The other eight newcomers claimed numbers that were previously unoccupied. However, there have also been several departures this summer, which in turn, have left several shirt numbers vacant.

As it stands, any potential January signings for Liverpool, including Guehi, can choose from the following available numbers; 13, 16, 19, 21, 23, 24, 27, 29, 31, 32, 33, 34, 35, 36, 37, 39, 40.
