Speculation is mounting around Marc Guehi's future, and one ex-Liverpool defender has suggested there could already be a private agreement in place for him to head to Anfield in January

Liverpool legend John Arne Riise believes there may be a mutual agreement for Marc Guehi to join Liverpool in January.
The Crystal Palace captain was reportedly undergoing a medical ahead of a $47 million move to Liverpool in the summer, but the south London club pulled out of the deal following manager Oliver Glasner’s insistence on retaining the England international.
Guehi is in the final year of his Palace contract, and chairman Steve Parish acknowledged in August that the club was keen to avoid losing the 25-year-old on a free transfer next summer. Guehi will soon be allowed to hold talks with foreign clubs and will be eligible to sign a pre-contract agreement starting on January 1.

Riise said: "I was so disappointed that Marc Guehi didn't sign for Liverpool in the summer, but I wouldn't be surprised if they had a mutual agreement that it would go ahead in January. I hope he does because he's the type of player I would like to see fighting with Ibrahima Konate for a position next to Virgil van Dijk."
Liverpool reportedly has a gentleman's agreement in place Palace to sign Guehi. Liverpool’s sole route to securing the 25-year-old before next summer would be negotiating a deal with Palace, rather than waiting for him to join on a free transfer.
The Reds are keen to bolster their defensive ranks, with a center-back their primary target for 2026, particularly as Konate is set to leave once his contract expires. There remains an opportunity, however, for Konaté to agree to a new deal and extend his stay at the club.

However Alexander Isak’s injury last weekend against Tottenham could shift Liverpool’s short-term priorities. The situation carries risk, with Bayern Munich and Real Madrid showing interest in Guehi, while Barcelona could also enter the race following Andreas Christensen’s injury.
Despite the approaching transfer window and the flurry of potential moves, Arne Slot remains focused on the present rather than the market. "My only thoughts are on the upcoming two games," he stated ahead of Saturday's game against Wolves. "Two difficult ones again, two home games.
"I think it's a time for the players we do have available to do what they've done so many times, to roll their sleeves up, and not only our players, but our fans as well to help us in the best possible way to get the results we want.
"The players that are available need to give everything they have, and the fans, as they usually do, and I expect them to do now again as well, will help us. That is where my focus is."
