Marc Guehi shows his true colors when asked about failed Liverpool transfer

4 hours ago 3

Marc Guehi has affirmed his commitment to Crystal Palace, despite a failed transfer to Liverpool on deadline day.

The England international was set to join the Premier League champion last month. However, the move fell through when Palace was unable to secure an adequate replacement, leaving Guehi's dream move hanging in the balance.

Despite this setback, the 25-year-old has maintained his impressive form and professionalism for the Eagles, who recently defeated Liverpool on penalties in the Community Shield and then 2-1 in the Premier League on Saturday. This victory extended their club-record unbeaten streak in all competitions to 18 matches. Guehi's future, however, appears to be away from Selhurst Park.

His contract expires at the end of the season, and he is not expected to renew it.

Liverpool remains interested in securing his services, but following the deadline day debacle, the Reds stated that they had no plans to revisit the deal in the January transfer window.

Whether this stance will change in light of Giovanni Leoni's severe injury remains to be seen.

Ahead of Palace's Europa Conference League match against Dynamo Kyiv on Thursday, Guehi was asked about the thwarted move to Liverpool during the pre-match press conference.

His professionalism and commitment to his current club were clear, showing his true colors.

"I don't have much to say, to be honest," he responded. "I'm focused on playing football and playing for this club. But to the fans (I want to say) thank you very much for your support. I definitely feel it."

Guehi, who will skipper the FA Cup winner in its maiden European group stage game against Kyiv, continued: "It's something I don't think of at all. My only focus is on the club; I'm not too worried about any personal accolades. As long as the team is where it needs to be, I'm happy.

"When you've tasted success, you're definitely not satisfied and do want more. Everyone at the club strives for more. We've seen what we can do. If we keep our heads down, hopefully we can have many more opportunities."

A late agreement was reached between Palace and Liverpool on deadline day. Following the completion of his medical in London, the center-back appeared poised to pen a five-year deal at Anfield.

However, Palace's own pursuit of a replacement collapsed when Brighton's Julio Igor, who was close to securing a loan move, received an approach from West Ham, prompting a U-turn.

This development had a domino effect on Guehi's potential switch to Merseyside, with Eagles manager Oliver Glasner maintaining that a suitable replacement must be secured.

Palace managed to confirm French youth international Jaydee Canvot on a four-year contract, though the 19-year-old is not considered ready to fill Guehi's boots at this point in his development.
