Marc Guehi has surfaced as a target for Real Madrid, and the Spanish team may be compelled to act earlier than anticipated.
Liverpool target Guehi's contract at Crystal Palace expires in the summer, but an injury to Eder Militao could prompt Madrid to make an approach as early as January. That's bad news for the Reds, who saw a summer move for Guehi collapse at the last minute.
"Following tests conducted on our player Eder Militao by the Real Madrid Medical Services, he has been diagnosed with a rupture of the biceps femoris tendon in the left leg, specifically affecting the proximal tendon. His progress will be monitored," a statement read.
The injury is expected to sideline Militao until March. With mounting pressure both domestically and in Europe, the club may opt to accelerate its pursuit of Guehi, even if it means paying a premium.
Madrid secured Trent Alexander-Arnold from Liverpool for a modest fee ahead of the Club World Cup rather than waiting for his contract to run down. However, Palace may prove more difficult to deal with, given the captain's importance to the Eagles and the considerable portion of the season still to play.
Barcelona is among the other clubs interested in securing Guehi's signature.
Intriguingly, Liverpool center-back Ibrahima Konate has been touted as another potential target for Madrid despite his inconsistent campaign. The Frenchman finds himself in a comparable position to Guehi, as his contract expires in the summer.
It's believed Madrid recently informed Liverpool that it will not swoop for Konate at the end of this season, but the Spanish club may change its mind and go for Konate in January after seeing Militao suffer a long-term injury.
Madrid is set to take on Manchester City in the Champions League during midweek, while rumors intensify surrounding Xabi Alonso's future.
The former Spain midfielder is facing mounting pressure just months into his tenure following Carlo Ancelotti's departure, with Los Blancos suffering defeat to Celta Vigo in their most recent league fixture, leaving them trailing four points behind Barcelona in La Liga.
"This is a team, this is a club, and we're all united," Alonso remarked when questioned about feeling isolated amid the speculation.
"When you're the Real Madrid coach, you have to be prepared to face these situations calmly, with unity, and with the responsibility that I feel, and I’m looking forward for what’s to come, and that starts tomorrow.
"We know we can turn this around. From the anger that was there, which was normal, to the excitement that's being generated thinking about tomorrow. We're focused solely on City and the Champions League, and this can change quickly.
"Fortunately, in football, for better or for worse, the vision, the perspective, can shift quickly, and we're at that moment."
