Bayern Munich is ramping up efforts to secure the signature of Marc Guehi, and they may have an edge over Liverpool. Guehi's contract with Crystal Palace is set to expire in 2026, but his future club and departure date remain uncertain.
Liverpool were once seen as the frontrunners to sign Guehi, having nearly secured his services last summer. The England international had even completed a medical and was on the brink of a £35million move before Palace chairman Steve Parish put a halt to proceedings on deadline day.
Arne Slot is keen to bolster his central defensive options with Guehi, especially given the injury to Giovanni Leoni. However, Slot has suggested that Liverpool won't be hasty in their pursuit of Guehi come January – potentially leaving the door open for Bayern.
Like many of Europe's elite clubs, Bayern are eyeing Guehi, who might be enticed to follow in the footsteps of his England colleague Harry Kane by making a move to Bavaria. With Dayot Upamecano's contract due to expire at season's end, Bayern are zeroing in on Guehi.
According to Bild, sporting director Christoph Freund has been in talks with Palace manager Oliver Glasner about Guehi. Bayern don't view Guehi's potential signing as linked to Upamecano's possible departure, and like Liverpool, see him as an opportunity too good to pass up, reports the Mirror.
Significantly, Bayern will have the opportunity to discuss a potential summer free transfer with Guehi from 1 January, thanks to the Bosman Ruling. Liverpool are all too familiar with this scenario, having seen Trent Alexander-Arnold depart for Real Madrid in a similar manner last summer.
Bayern have already begun laying the groundwork, with their director of sport, Max Eberl, having met with Guehi's representatives in Munich. Guehi was eager to swap Palace for Liverpool over the summer, but it remains to be seen if he can be persuaded again.
Discussing the situation recently, Glasner revealed: "I think Marc has already told us that he doesn't sign a new contract, so he will leave next year. The club wanted [him to stay]. They offered Marc a new contract. But he said, 'No, I want to make something different'.
"And that's normal. And for us, it's [about] how we can deal with this situation? [What] is the best way to get this next step done? And that's all about how we are talking together."
Despite his uncertain future, Guehi has continued to captain Palace and has made 15 appearances across all competitions this season. He remains a key player for the club he joined in 2021 from Chelsea and will depart with their best wishes in 2026.
