Mathys Tel could still make Tottenham’s Champions League squad after UEFA twist

2 hours ago 2

UEFA have now approved a proposed amendment to the regulations for the Champions League, which could come as a boost to Mathys Tel at Tottenham.

Given Tottenham’s shortage of homegrown and club-trained players in their ranks, Thomas Frank faced a very tricky decision when naming the Champions League squad.

In the end, Frank left out six senior Tottenham players from the squad for the league phase, with Tel being the most surprising absentee.

Many Spurs fans were shocked that Tel did not make the Champions League squad, given that the Frenchman was the club’s first signing of the Frank era.

UEFA’s decision offers Mathys Tel a potential Tottenham lifeline

It has now been revealed by Alasdair Gold that UEFA’s executive committee approved an amendment to this season’s UEFA club competitions’ regulations.

Following the amendment, clubs can temporarily replace one outfield player in their squad if he suffers from injury or illness.

However, the change would have to be made by matchday six, which will be played in the final week of November.

UEFA's executive committee today approved an amendment to this season's UEFA men’s club competitions’ regulations to admit the temporary replacement of a maximum of one outfield player with long-term injury or illness during the league phase up to and including matchday six.

This means that if there is an injury at Spurs, then one of Tel, Yves Bissouma, Dejan Kulusevski, Kota Takai, or Radu Dragusin could still play a part in the league phase.

How Tel has reacted to Thomas Frank’s snub

Frank’s decision to leave out the 20-year-old just months after he signed for the club could have shattered his confidence.

Tel admitted that he is disappointed but vowed to come back in the best way possible and prove his worth to the Tottenham boss.

He certainly did that during the international break, with Tel netting a brilliant brace for France’s U21s against Serbia, reminding everyone of his finishing prowess.
