Max Dowman has enjoyed a breakout campaign for Arsenal this term, but a fellow wonderkid cannot play in the Premier League for Manchester United
JJ Gabriel may be amongst England's most exciting talents at present, but he is currently ineligible to feature for Manchester United owing to his age.
To compete in England's top division, players must have reached 15 years of age before August 31, meaning Gabriel has yet to be permitted to progress to the United senior squad. This mirrors the circumstances faced by Arsenal's Max Dowman, who has lately become a star for the Gunners.
Dowman created history by finding the net against Everton last weekend and becoming the youngest player ever to score in the Premier League. The 16-year-old surpassed Cesc Fabregas' record for Arsenal and is flourishing in north London.
However, there was a period when he couldn't feature for the Gunners' senior side due to a Premier League rule prohibiting players under 16. Dowman failed to satisfy the strict age requirements in 2024, so the youngster was forced to wait until August 2025 to make his Premier League bow for Arsenal.

He entered the action against Leeds United last year and earned a penalty in the same match. Gabriel will now need to adhere to these identical regulations and await his opportunity to represent United at the highest level.
He has already been participating in first-team training sessions, and supporters are eager for him to feature. However, the fact that the young player only celebrated his 15th birthday last October has prevented him from being included in a matchday squad.
United fans will be hopeful that Gabriel will follow in Dowman's footsteps as he turns into one of Arsenal - and England's - most promising young stars. In fact, Mikel Arteta has placed plenty of faith in the 16-year-old already and claimed the entire squad has been inspired by Dowman's meteoric rise.
When asked if Dowman's enthusiasm could rub off on the team, the Arsenal boss said: "That’s a good point. It’s very inspiring when you see someone almost naive making decisions and flowing and careless playing in that manner. It’s great.
"Probably our players realised as well. It’s a good example, playing with that flow and enthusiasm is very beneficial for the team."
Fellow Arsenal teammate Riccardo Calafiori has also been full of praise for the teenager. Discussing his goal against Everton, he said: "I was so, so happy.
"Maybe the best moment of the season so far, at least in Premier League for sure. He’s so young, but at the same time so mature on the pitch.
"He can improve many things, but he’s a talent. You can see it. But we have to leave him quiet and try not to speak about him too much because he has everything."
