Michael Owen believes Liverpool will cope without Hugo Ekitike but says it’s vital Alexander Isak avoids picking up further injuries this season.
The Swedish striker has started the last two Liverpool matches after recovering from a broken leg in December. His return coincided with Ekitike’s season-ending Achilles injury that will see him miss the World Cup and the start of next term.
It adds extra pressure on Isak to make an impact, and the $169 million man has struggled since returning to the side. He managed just five touches before being replaced at half-time against Paris Saint-Germain and then just nine in 72 minutes during the 2-1 win over Everton.

“Yes I do,” the ex-Liverpool and Newcastle man told Liverpool.com via Casino.org.
“I really feel for Ekitike after that horrible injury. I have been hugely impressed with his performances this season and had him down as one of the top five strikers in European football.
“I like his energy and he has brought a lot to the Liverpool team this season. So it’s a hugely unfortunate injury.

“For Isak and Liverpool, I still believe he needs to be managed and conditioned well from now until the end of the season.
“You don’t want him to pick up another injury, which can happen. Other injuries can come up when you are looking to get back to 100 percent fitness.”
With Mohamed Salah leaving and Ekitike likely to miss a large portion of the 2026/27 campaign, Liverpool has been linked with moves for several attackers this summer.
Isak’s former team-mate Anthony Gordon is among them, and the boyhood Red’s ability to play anywhere across the front three makes him an attractive proposition.

The Newcastle winger has been linked with a $101 million move to Bayern Munich this summer, but having nearly joined Liverpool two years ago, rumors have suggested the Reds still retain an interest.
Owen believes the England international would be a valuable addition in the transfer market.
“With Salah leaving, I do think Liverpool need to strengthen in the wide area, so yes I like Gordon a lot,” the 46-year-old opined. “He has proven Premier League experience and has a lot of positives in his game he could bring to Liverpool.
“It’s a lot of money which could be need to secure him from Newcastle, but if Liverpool can find a way, then, he would be a good signing for them.”
