Micky van de Ven hits back at media outlets for treatment of Tottenham’s ‘brilliant’ Xavi Simons

Micky van de Ven stole the show against Copenhagen, but he has opted to heap praise on his Tottenham teammate Xavi Simons.

It was tough to imagine that Micky van de Ven could have more joy in a Tottenham Hotspur shirt than when he delivered his spectacular goal-line clearance in the Europa League final.

However, the central defender has since captained his team and become their top scorer so far this season with six goals in all competitions.

van de Ven’s latest effort might just put him in contention for the Puskas award, as he dribbled through Copenhagen’s entire team to find the back of the net.

Micky van de Ven lauds Xavi Simons after Tottenham’s 4-0 victory

Despite van de Ven’s brilliance, he has opted to praise his fellow teammate rather than himself – a testament to his selfless character.

The Netherlands international has spoken highly of Xavi Simons, who created moments of magic in the Tottenham midfield before having to make way for Joao Palhinha.

He told Football London: “He [Simons] had a great performance. He really created some big opportunities from our side. It was a good game from his side and also in the last couple of games.

“Of course he’s in a new country so everything is different. Everyone expects a lot from him straight away, he played good games but you guys [the media] are always on him in certain ways of course.

“But game by game you see he’s making steps. He was brilliant tonight.”

Simons is likely to start against Manchester United

Simons was removed from Thomas Frank’s starting lineup against Chelsea last Saturday, but he was brought on when Lucas Bergvall suffered a head knock. The 22 year old’s performance that evening will have done him no favours, but Tuesday was a different story.

No player on the pitch was able to match Simons for creativity and he has surely earned himself a place in the starting lineup for Tottenham’s next Premier League fixture.
