Micky van de Ven has admitted that Ange Postecoglou did something that he did not expect a few days after he had arrived at Tottenham.
Van de Ven has only been at Tottenham for a little over two seasons, but the centre-back already feels like he is part of the furniture at the North London club.
Such has been the Dutchman’s impact at Spurs both on and off the pitch, with his hamstring injuries being the only blight in what has been a tremendous start to his time at the club.
Thomas Frank has said that Tottenham have formulated plans to avoid another injury crisis this season, and the Lilywhites’ fortunes will undoubtedly depend a great deal on whether they can keep the Netherlands international fit through the season.
Micky van de Ven did not expect to start as soon as he did at Tottenham
The centre-back made an instant impact as soon as he arrived from Wolfsburg, and his class was apparent from his first game.
However, Van de Ven confessed that he did not expect to be given the nod to start against Brentford as he had only had two or three training sessions with the team after arriving.
Van de Ven told Tottenham’s official channel: “I think when I joined, we played Brentford at the weekend for the first Premier League game, I’ve been training two/three days, and the gaffer put me straight into the 11.
“Even I was like, ‘Wow, I didn’t expect this’ he just threw me straight away into the team. I just needed to adapt straight away, and my teammates and everyone at the club welcomed me with open arms, saying, ‘You’re one of us now’.”
Van de Ven admits every player knows what Thomas Frank expects
The Dutchman and his teammates have had to adapt to a different style of coach this summer after two seasons of Postecoglou’s free-flowing, high-risk approach.
The Tottenham defender insists that every player in the squad already knows exactly what Frank and his coaching staff expect from all of them.
Van de Ven said on the new Spurs boss: “You can really see he lives the game, he loves it, every time he speaks about it, he’s on everything.
“Even in pre-season, his vision of football and plan, his tactical play in training, you have to do the drill every time, over and over and over, every day, every second he is on it.
“Even at this point, everybody knows what the gaffer expects and everybody just does it, I have the feeling that he has his way of playing and he’s translated quite quickly to the group.”
