Mikel Arteta has been warned that Arsenal's "slow and sterile possession-based approach to big matches" could render Viktor Gyokeres "redundant".
And the Gunners boss is being challenged to rethink his strategy to maximise the potential of his expensive summer acquisition.
Gyokeres made the switch from Sporting CP in a deal valued at £64million, following calls for the Gunners to finally secure a prolific striker.
The Swedish international enjoyed great success in Portugal and has already netted three times in his first five Premier League appearances, including a brace against Leeds United in his inaugural domestic match at the Emirates Stadium.
However, he was largely contained in clashes against Manchester United, Liverpool and Manchester City.
Much like Erling Haaland, Gyokeres' performance will likely be evaluated based on his ability to score against and dominate Arsenal's main rivals. Despite not yet making his mark in a high-profile match, Tony Cascarino believes Arteta needs to step up his game.
In an article for The Times, he stated: "Arteta will need to adjust his approach in big games to get the best out of his £63million striker and give Arsenal the best possible chance of winning the title this season. Gyokeres was signed to be the missing piece for Arsenal, to push them from contenders to champions, but he can't do that if his team do not create anything for him."
Arsenal also have the likes of Eberechi Eze, Noni Madueke and Martin Zubimendi to provide service to their frontman following another summer of significant investment – and Cascarino insists it is their responsibility to supply Gyokeres with the opportunities he requires.
The former Chelsea striker said: "Gyokeres is doing what he can to lead the line, making runs in behind and battling with defenders, but it is on Arteta if the centre forward's team-mates don't find him."
In recent years Kai Havertz has established himself as the player best suited to spearhead Arsenal's attack. His all-round contribution has brought him success, particularly through his link-up play.
However, his shortage of natural finishing ability has been highlighted as a concern, which prompted their pursuit of Gyokeres.
Nevertheless, the German has been backed to feature ahead of the Swede upon his return to peak condition, which could prove devastating for Gyokeres.
"I wouldn't be surprised if Arteta picked Kai Havertz over Gyokeres once the Germany player is back to full fitness," said Cascarino. "Havertz suits Arsenal's approach to big matches much more with his ability to hold up the ball and drop in to link play.
"Gyokeres wouldn't have expected that to be a possibility when he signed, but it could certainly become a reality."
Gyokeres netted twice against Leeds and also found the net against Nottingham Forest. Arsenal eventually moved for him rather than Benjamin Sesko, who had also caught their attention.
The Slovenian subsequently joined Manchester United and has yet to open his account.
