Mikel Arteta provides instant Gabriel Magalhaes Arsenal injury update after AC Milan

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta has explained why Gabriel Magalhaes missed the pre-season friendly win over AC Milan on Wednesday.

The Gunners beat the Italian side by a single goal thanks to Bukayo Saka's strike in the second-half. Christian Norgaard started the contest before Kepa Arrizabalaga and Martin Zubimendi came on in the second half.

"We're all very happy with the performance, especially with the attitude, quality and domination that we showed throughout the game and obviously to win as well," Arteta said.

"Regarding the individuals, a lot of them showed that they are ready and at a really good level."

Before the game, questions were asked about Gabriel after he was excluded from the squad. The centre-back joined Jurrien Timber to sit out of the win despite travelling out to Asia.

Despite being pictured in training and playing a part in the behind-closed-doors friendly against Watford before travelling to Asia, Gabriel was nowhere to be seen against AC Milan. Speaking after Wednesday's win, Arteta explained the defensive duo's absence: "With Jurrien he is still not there," he said.

"He is still not fully training yet with us. Gabby [Gabriel] had a little niggle the other day in training. Because the fact that he has been out so long as well we have to manage him.

"We have been in Spain, different pitch, different conditions, go to the UK, different ones, come here, again a lot of changes. We have to minimise the risk with him.

Arteta's men face Newcastle United on Sunday in Singapore before traveling to Hong Kong to take on Tottenham.
