Kris Boyd believes Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain would thrive at Celtic if the free agent puts pen to paper with the former Liverpool midfielder continuing to train with Arsenal as he weighs up his next move.

However, the Rangers legend has called on Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta to step in before any agreement can be finalized. Reports from south of the border have suggested the Scottish Premiership champions are keen on the 32 year old.

The former Liverpool and Gunners' player has been without a club since departing Besiktas last summer, and could complete a move to Scotland outside the transfer window, which closed on Monday.

After Sky Sports presenter Gordon Duncan highlighted that Mikel Arteta had declined to dismiss a potential move for the midfielder, Boyd commented: "I think it was interesting what was said there, Mikel Arteta might want to keep him at Arsenal. I hope he does.

"He is obviously getting older but you don't lose that ability that Oxlade-Chamberlain had. If Celtic complete that deal, the Arne Engels one is even more baffling.

"If you have got someone who was about to come in on a free transfer, and Nottingham Forest want to pay you for Arne Engels I can't believe you wouldn't have taken it. It's crazy.

"But, there is no doubt that Oxlade-Chamberlain would be a success in Scotland. He is someone who has done it, more or less, wherever he has went.

"Yes, he has had his injury problems but I think the older you get, the more you look after your body. I can't say I done that myself, but I imagine someone of that level would.

"I think he would be a success at Celtic, but hopefully he stays where he is right now, training, and Mikel Arteta can get that deal over the line."

Arteta spoke about Oxlade-Chamberlain recently, revealing: "It’s great to have him around. Very proud to have him because first of all he wanted to be back.

“So when that happens, he’s a player that’s been out and he wants to come, it’s a really good sign.

“It means that he feels loved here, respected and he believes it’s the right environment for him to again start to build something new in his career.

“We all know Alex, how a magnificent person he is. He can be a great example for the other players as well with his experience and even for me. So good to have him around.”
