Milos Kerkez shares reality of Andy Robertson battle for Liverpool starting spot

2 hours ago 20

Milos Kerkez has praised Andy Robertson for helping him settle at Liverpool despite the summer signing essentially ousting the Scotland captain from the team.

Kerkez, who joined from Bournemouth in a deal worth $54 million (£40M) in June, has started all four matches this season, limiting Robertson to two appearances off the bench. But there appears to be no resentment from the experienced defender, who has been a mainstay of the team for the last eight years.

Renowned as a genial and charismatic figure, Robertson opted to remain at Liverpool this summer and was named vice-captain by Arne Slot. As part of that role, he has helped the new signings settle, which Jeremie Frimpong referenced in a recent interview.

Speaking after Sunday’s win over Arsenal, Kerkez said Robertson has been hugely influential in his first weeks at Liverpool.

“Obviously, you can say he’s a legend here already and he did a lot of amazing stuff,” the Reds’ new No. 6 told Malaysian broadcaster Stadium Astro.

“For me it’s great to have someone like that and of course we are talking.

Sunday's performance against Arsenal was Kerkez's best since signing for Liverpool

“He helps everyone, not just me. He’s the vice-captain and he’s really holding the locker room well.

“For me, I’m honored to have someone like that next to me, so I can continue to improve in the coming years also. He’s going to help me in that,”

Earlier this week, Robertson opened up on the decision to remain at Liverpool this summer, despite links of a transfer away from Anfield.

“When you're at a top club, I think the season's long, there's plenty of games, and I believe I'll play plenty of games,” the 31-year-old told BBC Scotland.

Robertson has struggled for game time in the early weeks of the season.

“Now, whether that is the case or not, nobody can look into the future, unfortunately, and nobody can see that.

"Obviously, in the summer, I had to think about what I wanted and what I wanted to do. I came to the decision, I committed to the decision, and I'm happy to be there.

"Pre-season, I came back in really good shape, training really well, and obviously, maybe not got the game time that I would have liked in the first part of the season, but that's part and parcel of it.

"I believe when we come back and we've got lots of games, then hopefully that I can play more games.

“I've missed the feeling of playing games, obviously, I'm used to being a regular starter for so many years and it's been a bit difficult with the transition.”
