Chris Sutton has given his verdict on Mohamed Salah’s bombshell interview at Leeds United on Saturday and feels the Liverpool winger has essentially declared “civil war” against Arne Slot.
Salah claimed on Saturday that he had been “thrown under the bus” by the Liverpool head coach, said someone at the club wanted him to leave, and stated his previous form over recent years should ensure his continued place in the starting line-up.
The reaction was quick and decisive from Slot and the club hierarchy in the days after. Salah was dropped for the match against Inter Milan on Tuesday and watched from home as his teammates earned a crucial three points at the San Siro.
Slot implied after the game that Salah should apologize if the situation is to be resolved itself, and will provide a further update in Friday’s pre-match press conference. It remains unclear at this point whether the Liverpool attacker will play any part against Brighton & Hove Albion.
Meanwhile, Sutton, a man never shy to share his opinion, slammed Salah’s actions in the immediate aftermath.
“He has been honest and open, but he has made it all about him and not the team,” the former striker said on BBC Radio 5 Live's Monday Night Club.
“He has been extremely selfish because now there is a bit of a civil war at Liverpool and it didn't need to be like this.
“There are ways to do things - like having a private conversation with a manager where you can tell him what you think of him and he can tell you what he thinks of you.
“That is fine because it stays within the walls of the manager's room. But what good could come out of what he did?
“We are seeing Mo Salah for what he really is and it's all about him being selfish. I think he has really let himself down.
"It is such a terrible look and everyone is talking about it so how has it been helpful?"
Meanwhile, several Liverpool stars, including Alisson, Virgil van Dijk, Andy Robertson, Curtis Jones and Dominik Szoboszlai, have spoken about the situation in the days since Salah’s incendiary remarks.
“I’m very close with him," Szoboszla said after the 1-0 win over Inter. “It’s nothing to do with the players.
“It’s him and his own choice with what he is doing with his own life and his own career.”
“It’s not our decision as players,” Liverpool’s no.8 added, when asked if he wants Salah to stay.
“I love him as a human being, as a friend of mine. As a player, he has done so much for this club; it’s going to be the club’s and his decision.”
