It may have been a frustrating season for Salah, but his recent return to goalscoring ways is hugely encouraging for Liverpool and Arne Slot. The Egyptian netted the second goal in the Reds' 3-1 win over Wolves

Mohamed Salah has now scored more goals for Liverpool than Wayne Rooney managed for Manchester United

Mohamed Salah set another unique landmark on Friday, as the Liverpool winger scored in the Reds’ 3-1 FA Cup victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers.

The Egyptian tapped in at the back post from Andy Robertson’s pinpoint cross, and although it was initially ruled as offside, the on-field decision was overturned following a VAR review.

That was Salah’s ninth goal of the season and his second in the space of just four days. It moves Salah on to 254 in a red jersey, eclipsing the number Wayne Rooney netted during his Manchester United career. With 253 goals for United, the former striker is the club’s all-time top scorer, an accolade he took from Sir Bobby Charlton in 2017.

However, Salah remains third on Liverpool’s all-time list, 41 shy of second-place Roger Hunt, and nearly 100 behind Ian Rush. The latter netted 346 times during his prestigious Liverpool career.

But Salah’s numbers would also better the highest scorer for Arsenal (Thierry Henry, 228), Chelsea (Frank Lampard, 211) and Newcastle United (Alan Shearer, 206).

However, his numbers remain a little shy of Sergio Aguero’s 260 for Manchester City, or the 280 Harry Kane managed for Tottenham Hotspur.

Even more impressive is the number scored by Dixie Dean for Liverpool’s local rivals, Everton. Dean managed a staggering 383 for the Toffees during his career.

Meanwhile, Salah’s goal and his contribution to Robertson’s opener in the 3-1 win at Molineux helped mask another disappointing display from Liverpool’s no.11.

He earned repeated criticism from Stephen Warnock on commentary duty before the goals, with the former full-back claiming he simply “must do better”.

But Arne Slot said post-match that he hopes Salah’s recent return to goalscoring ways helps instill a renewed sense of confidence.

“It's always pleasing if we score, but I think it's also important for attackers to score because if they don't score over a long time, they're maybe starting to force it or going to do different things.

“So, the more they score, the less they are going to force it and that's why it's important for our attackers either to score or be part of the lead-up to a goal.

“Like I just said, Cody [Gakpo] twice played a very good role in the first two goals we scored.”

Salah’s midweek goal at Molineux was his first in the Premier League for over four months, and he has managed just five in the league this season.
