Mohamed Salah overtakes Thierry Henry in first game of Premier League season

8 hours ago 42

Mohamed Salah has written yet another chapter in his remarkable Premier League career, overtaking Arsenal legend Thierry Henry in the standings for most non-penalty goals.

The Liverpool forward scored on the opening day for the 10th season running, sealed Liverpool’s victory over Bournemouth on Friday night with a powerful right-footed strike deep into stoppage time, following Federico Chiesa’s dramatic 88th-minute goal that had restored the Reds’ advantage.

The finish drew Salah level with Andy Cole in the Premier League’s all-time scoring charts, moving his tally to 187 goals. Only Alan Shearer, Harry Kane, and Wayne Rooney now sit above the Egyptian in the competition’s history books.

Henry, long celebrated as one of the greatest players in Premier League history, scored 175 goals during his time with Arsenal. While a portion of those came from the penalty spot, Salah’s tally now places him ahead when isolating non-penalty strike.

The 33-year-old has now scored 153 goals away from the spot compared to Henry's 152. It's not the first time the Egyptian has overtaken the French striker, he surpassed Henry for goals during a win against Ipswich in January before setting a new record for goal contributions back in April surpassing the tally once held by the Frenchman and Manchester City's Erling Haaland.

There has no hint of resentment though from Henry as he summed up Salah’s efforts during an appearance on Monday Night Football last season. “Look, he’s just like a fine wine" said Henry.

“He’s looking for it, I always say to people if you look to do something, you will eventually do it. What he’s doing right now is legendary. That’s exactly what it is.”

Mohamed Salah has now scored more non-penalty kicks than Thierry Henry

Since arriving at Anfield in 2017, Salah has consistently delivered goals of every variety—cutting inside from the right, finishing from tight angles, and finding space behind defences. But what sets his latest achievement apart is that it emphasizes his ability to convert chances from open play, where skill, timing, and instinct are paramount.

With the season only just underway, there is every chance Salah could climb even higher in all-time Premier League goalscorer rankings, further separating himself from Henry and closing in on the elite company ahead of him.

Last season, Salah delivered an incredible 34 goals and 23 assists in all competitions, playing a pivotal role in guiding Arne Slot’s side to the league title. Salah also stands as Liverpool’s third-highest goalscorer, trailing only club icons Ian Rush and Roger Hunt.

With Hunt just 39 goals ahead, the Egyptian has a realistic chance of overtaking him before the end of his Liverpool career.
