Liverpool star Mohamed Salah would be welcomed at Major League Soccer with "open arms," according to league commissioner Don Garber.
Salah's future at Liverpool remains uncertain, despite signing a two-year extension with the club in April. The Egyptian winger has established himself as a club legend, but claimed that Liverpool had thrown him "under the bus" as he remained on the bench during a poor run of form.
Head coach Arne Slot was also referenced in an honest mixed zone interview, as Salah said they had no relationship. Slot proceeded to drop Salah for Tuesday's Champions League clash against Inter Milan, and transfer speculation has increased since the saga began.
It's not known if Salah will be considered for Liverpool's next game against Brighton, but either way, the Egyptian will then head to the Africa Cup of Nations. Liverpool wishes to retain Salah for the remainder of his contract, but could cash in if the situation becomes untenable.
The Saudi Pro League has been attempting to sign Salah for years, with the winger one of the most recognizable Muslim players in the world. However, should Salah be allowed to leave, clubs across the globe will be vying for his signature.
The Salah saga at Liverpool has spread like wildfire to the extent that Garber was asked about the situation when speaking to MLS media. Garber was present to watch Lionel Messi be crowned MVP for the second straight season.
"I’ve seen some rumors about Mo Salah," he said. "We very much believe in the sanctity of a contract; that’s an American business dynamic. Mo’s under contract to Liverpool, people we know. It’s a great team."
While Garber respected his position with Liverpool, he suggested that Salah reach out to Lionel Messi or Thomas Müller if he ever considers moving to the United States or Canada. "Obviously, if [Salah] ever decides to come to Major League Soccer, we’d welcome him with open arms," Garber added.
"I’d say he should reach out to Leo [Messi] and reach out to Thomas Müller and see how happy they’ve been and how successful they’ve been and how much they’ve really embraced being in Major League Soccer."
According to Transfermarkt, Salah is valued at $35 million, which is roughly $25 million less than his approximate valuation at the end of last season. It's doubtful that Liverpool would sell Salah for that figure, given his talent, legacy, and influence, which continue to increase his value to the club.
However, MLS fees have been rising, and the transfer record was broken twice in 2025. After Atlanta United signed Emmanuel Latte Lath from Middlesbrough for $22 million, Los Angeles FC broke the record when signing Tottenham winger Heung-Min Son for $26.5 million.
San Diego FC is owned by British-Egyptian billionaire Mohamed Mansour, with reports suggesting that he could pursue a move for Salah if the player is open to joining MLS. Inter Miami also has the profile, and the club is set to make imminent marquee signings following the retirements of Jordi Alba and Sergio Busquets.
The only MLS club to ever make a move for Salah was the Chicago Fire, who made contact before he extended his terms with Liverpool. Salah also has a Chicago connection, as former Liverpool star Xherdan Shaqiri played in the Windy City.
