Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah continues to create chatter with his season not having gone to plan, with Emile Heskey the latest pundit to weigh in on the Egyptian

Mohamed Salah has been told he could sign for one of Europe's biggest clubs whenever it is that he leaves Liverpool, amid lingering speculation surrounding the Saudi Pro League.

After signing a two-year contract extension with Liverpool in April of last year, Salah has only scored four times in 20 appearances in the Premier League this season. He has been below par for much of the campaign, though there have been glimpses of his class.

Nonetheless, there will be links with a summer exit. Even if he stays put until his deal ends, he will be almost 35 by the time his Liverpool contract expires.

"Could Mohamed Salah move to a Barcelona, a Real Madrid or a Bayern Munich instead of the Saudi Pro League?" former Reds striker Emile Heskey said while speaking to OLBG this week.

"Everyone would love to see him go to those places. I’m sure he would as well. But you take what's there and in front of you.

"If Saudi is Salah’s route, well we've seen Cristiano Ronaldo still scoring goals out there. You see Ivan Toney still scoring goals. Sadio Mane's out there.

"There's no reason why you can't do it in Saudi Arabia and still be producing on an international level as well. It's whatever suits him to be honest with you. Once you've done what he's done, as fans, we've just got to accept what he decides.

"We accept and we love him for what he's done. When you look at the numbers that he's produced, no one can say anything."

Salah has not hit the same heights as last season and with Liverpool struggling as a team, that has created plenty of headlines.

"He set his own standards and those are so, so, so high and the moment he doesn't score for a few games, people are immediately surprised — that is the biggest compliment he can get," Arne Slot said before Liverpool beat West Ham 5-2.

"With data, you can use it to your advantage or disadvantage, but not to use the FA Cup game — if we play a Premier League side — you could argue if that is fair.

"But that's the way it works: if we want to highlight something really positive, we try to forget one or two games and if we want to highlight something negative, we can try to forget one or two games as well.

"Three games ago, he had an assist and a goal against a very good Premier League team Brighton, so that is the reality, and then you can change data and say he did not score in nine Premier League games.

"That is the standard he sets for himself and that is why people are surprised when things like that happen. We are used to Mo scoring a lot of goals and at this moment in time that is maybe the biggest difference in his performance and game time.

"But we also know this has happened before, I don't know if it happened nine games in a row but I've had these questions earlier if didn't score for three or five but I know in the end he always starts scoring again. That is the challenge he has and we have now to make sure he starts scoring again."

Liverpool.com says: Salah remains a quality player, but he doesn't have that bit of pace that he did. We saw against Brighton recently that he has the ability to find it on occasion, but there is no doubt that this season hasn't gone as planned.
