Former Premier League and Egypt defender Ahmed Elmohamady has called Jamie Carragher a "disgrace" and claimed that he was an "average" player in defense of Liverpool star Mohamed Salah.
Carragher was unhappy with Salah's comments after Liverpool's 3-3 draw against Leeds on Saturday, as the winger claimed he was 'thrown under the bus" by the club and has been scapegoated for poor performances. Salah also said his relationship with head coach Arne Slot was non-existent.
In response, Slot dropped Salah from the Champions League squad ahead of the match against Inter Milan on Tuesday and will revisit the situation once Liverpool returns to England. Carragher broke his silence on Monday Night Football, but Elmohamady has hit back after the Liverpool legend questioned Salah.
The situation in Liverpool is ugly. A turbulent period has now been rocked by a Salah outburst, with the fan base divided on whether to side with the player or Slot.
As a former Liverpool player who claimed to have never played for a manager, but gave his all for the club, Carragher was let down by Salah's actions. Carragher called Salah a "disgrace" and alleged that he only ever gives postgame interviews if it's to "cause damage" and strengthen his own position.
Carragher also accused Salah of trying to get Slot fired and reminded the Egyptian that his career had been elevated at Liverpool. Carragher believes that Salah failed during his stint with Chelsea, and reminded the player that he'd never won the Africa Cup of Nations with Egypt.
While Carragher was clearly annoyed with the damage Salah had done to Liverpool, his criticism of the player and Egypt's recent lack of success has angered Elmohamady, one of Salah's former teammates. The 38-year-old played in the Premier League for Hull, Sunderland, and Aston Villa, but shared the international stage with Salah.
"Right Jamie you’re a disgrace," he wrote on X. "Salah completely rewrote his story through hard work, humility, and world-class performances.
"He didn’t 'fail' at Chelsea — he was never given the chance. He went to Italy, rebuilt himself, then came to Liverpool and became: A Premier League legend, Egypt’s greatest ever player, one of the most consistent forwards of his generation.
"Salah has carried Egypt for Years and getting Egypt qualified for the World Cup twice after so long, Salah earned everything. No wonder you got blanked by C.Ronaldo. No wonder Messi called you out. No wonder Mourinho said you were below.
"Average and not even in top 1000 defender In PL."
Despite Elmohamady's fierce defense, Carragher did try to support his point after referencing Salah's stint at Chelsea on Monday night. "That is not me trying to put Mo Salah down as a player," Carragher said.
"I've just said he's one of the best players in the world in the last eight years, very few better. But what it tells Mo Salah and his agent is, it's not about an individual. You weren't a big star before you came to Liverpool. You haven't really won anything with Egypt.
"All that's telling you is, no matter how good a player you are, you need help from your teammates, your manager and fans. When he's talking after the game there in the mixed zone, all it's about is me, me, me."
