Moises Caicedo reveals how close Arsenal transfer was and why Chelsea star waited

Moises Caicedo has reflected on his failed transfer to Arsenal two years ago, as Chelsea prepare to face Mikel Arteta's side in a clash that could close the gap to just three points

Moises Caicedo believes everything happens for a reason after discussing his failed Arsenal transfer in January 2023.

Arsenal saw a £60million bid for Caicedo rejected by Brighton & Hove Albion, football.london reported at the time.

The Gunners submitted a bid for the Ecuadorian international, but Brighton swiftly rejected the offer. The move came as Mikel Arteta sought midfield reinforcements amid concerns over Mohamed Elneny's fitness.

However, Brighton have consistently shown they will not sell below their valuation, as seen in the cases of Marc Cucurella and Ben White. Two years later, Caicedo sealed a £100million move to Chelsea.

"Everything happens for a reason," he disclosed to the Daily Mail when discussing how close he came to joining Arsenal. "I almost did it but now I'm here and I'm so happy.

"The timing was good. I waited until Chelsea came for me. People laughed.

"They said I chose the wrong place, but sometimes you need time to adapt to a big team. I needed that.

"I want to give everything to this club because they didn't doubt me.

"I chose Chelsea because they have ambitions. I want to win trophies – more trophies with this club."

Liverpool also attempted to sign the 24-year-old, agreeing a £111m fee with Brighton, but the deal collapsed after Caicedo made clear his intention to join Chelsea.

He has settled quickly into the team, playing a key role for Enzo Maresca's side on several occasions this season.

Caicedo is full of confidence heading into Sunday's game against Arsenal (4:30pm).

Arteta's side sit six points clear at the top of the Premier League table, with many believing they can finally lift the trophy that has eluded them for 21 years.

Asked about whether Chelsea can give them a reality check, the midfielder added: "Why not? They are doing really well, but we haven't faced them yet."
