Myles Lewis-Skelly has been linked with a move away from Arsenal during the international break after a drop in game time from the previous season. Riccardo Calafiori has been the starting figure in the left-back position as the Gunners have taken the lead in the title race.
Lewis-Skelly burst onto the scene in the previous campaign after Calafiori’s fitness was regularly in question, and Oleksandr Zinchenko was ousted by the talented youngster. The Ukrainian international has since left on loan to Nottingham Forest in his final year of his Arsenal contract.
However, the summer arrival of Piero Hincapie has given Arteta another option, who he feels can play at left centre-half and left-back. Sky Sports have claimed a number of Premier League clubs are monitoring Lewis-Skelly's situation.
However, football.london understands full-back is relishing the challenge at Arsenal to fight for his spot. Having burst onto the scene at 18 years of age and scoring on his England debut, the teenager also scored and celebrated memorably in a 5-1 win over Manchester City.
The club are equally very happy with Lewis-Skelly’s progress, and his dip in game time is not seen at all as a step back in the player’s career. The now 19-year-old remains a key part of Mikel Arteta’s plans.
After being left out of Thomas Tuchel’s latest England squad in a World Cup year, Arteta was asked if he needed to put an arm around the youngster. While agreeing, he also highlighted how these moments might seem bad at the time, but in fact can be the making of you.
“Yes, for sure, I think we are here to support and help each other and to give a good perspective of the situation, and in the case of Myles, when you look at his age, what he's already done, he's just remarkable,” he said. “So don't look at the one moment what is happening for you because maybe it happens for the right reason and today you cannot see it.”
These are not the words of a manager thinking about a player’s imminent exit. In fact, his performance against Atletico Madrid in a high-profile Champions League match was excellent and he received a rightful high volume of plaudits.
In this new era of competitiveness at the club, there are very few players with guaranteed spots in the team, given the hectic schedule. The festive period is sure to help Lewis-Skelly get more game time and help the Gunners stay at the top of their game this season.
