Tottenham Hotspur are not the only ones monitoring a highly-rated England international, who is struggling for game time this season, with the Magpies also having their eyes firmly on the player’s situation.
Through the summer transfer window, it was reported that Spurs may be ready to pounce on Man United starlet Kobbie Mainoo, but the youngster ended up staying put at Old Trafford.
It appears that Tottenham Hotspur’s interest in the 21-year-old has not gone away despite the closure of the transfer window.
Just a couple of days ago, it emerged that Spurs may be ready to reignite their interest in Mainoo in January, with the midfielder potentially considering his future at Old Trafford as he struggles for game time under Rubem Amorim.
Newcastle are ready to challenge Tottenham for Kobbie Mainoo
However, even if the youngster decides to leave the Manchester club, Tottenham will not have a free run at Kobbie Mainoo.
This is because talkSPORT reports that Newcastle are also keeping close tabs on Mainoo’s current situation at United as he continues to warm the bench.
The report says that Eddie Howe is a big admirer of the midfielder, and the Magpies are keen to test the Red Devils’ resolve to hold onto the player in January.
It thus appears that we may see Spurs and Newcastle potentially go head-to-head for Mainoo in January.
Mainoo’s future could be tied to Rubem Amorim’s
The update from talkSPORT says that even Mainoo’s Man United teammates are perplexed by Amorim’s lack of faith in the youngster.
The Red Devils boss has previously said that the England man is in direct competition with his captain, Bruno Fernandes, for a place in his starting eleven (BBC Sport).
It thus appears that Mainoo will continue to struggle for minutes under the Portuguese coach, which is why Tottenham and Newcastle may be hoping that Amorim does not lose his job before January so that they would have a shot at signing the midfielder.
