A Newcastle United fan group has revealed it is “going big” for Monday night’s game against Liverpool, amid the hostility surrounding the Alexander Isak transfer saga.
Certain sections of the Magpies’ support base feel frustrated with Liverpool’s approach for the striker over the window, with Isak currently on strike and refusing to play for Newcastle in an effort to engineer a move to Anfield. Eddie Howe has already confirmed the 25-year-old won’t feature against Liverpool and said he is expecting a “electric” atmosphere at St James Park.
There is certainly a sense that fans wants to create a daunting environment for the Premier League champions. That will be enhanced by the customary flags, motifs and banners that are present on matchday.
Many of those are provided by Wor Flags, which is planning a pre-match display despite the noise surrounding Isak.
“We totally recognize the entire situation. That's why it's been really difficult as a group to get right because there are a lot of different opinions on this entire situation at the moment, so it's really difficult to get one unified view,” volunteer Thomas Concannon told BBC Sport.
“We think we have got something that hits the right tone. We will be going big as we always do, but with the aim of backing the lads that are on the pitch because that's what is most important.
"It feels absolutely huge,” he added. “It feels like there is way more riding on it than just three points. It's really strange. It's like Newcastle are going into a game with a massive rival.”
That rivalry has certainly been exacerbated over the summer due to the warring fanbases on social media and Liverpool’s transfer pursuit of Anthony Gordon last year, in addition the Carabao Cup final meeting in March.
Liverpool boss Arne Slot also said he expects to play in front of a raucous crowd in the north-east.
“I don't think they need anything to add for them being intense if they play at St. James' Park,” said the Dutchman ahead of the game.
“Apart from the intensity, it's a very good team; they have also a team that can that can make it a fight.
“They have players for this, but they also have players that are so comfortable on the ball, so one of the best teams in the league.
“And one of the most difficult away games that you can have in the season, especially, as you say it here, 'under the lights’.”
