Newcastle has received an unexpected boost in the transfer market following the aftermath of the summer window - and the Magpies could even get one over on Liverpool.
When Marc Guehi's last-minute move from Crystal Palace to the Reds fell through, officials at Newcastle kept a watchful eye on the situation from a distance, without making any new overtures for the services of the England star.
This was due to Newcastle already securing the services of Malick Thiaw from AC Milan, with the right-sided defender bolstering Eddie Howe's options in that area as the club looks beyond Fabian Schar and Jamaal Lascelles in the coming years.
However, the developments on deadline day mean that Liverpool has now decided against signing the centre-back again in January, preferring instead to wait until he becomes available on a free transfer.
Yet, the possibility remains that Crystal Palace might be open to potential cash offers for the center-back in January.
Palace manager Oliver Glasner was adamant about not selling Guehi, and there were rumors of him threatening to resign if the £35 million ($47 million) deal to sell the defender to Liverpool went ahead.
At one point, Newcastle offered the Eagles £70 million ($94.8 million) for Guehi, but Palace has one final opportunity to sell the star in January, which could make things interesting at Selhurst Park.
In the meantime, Palace has the chance to find a long-term replacement for Guehi, while Newcastle also has an eye on the future in that area, with Lascelles' contract ending next summer and Schar turning 34 in December.
Naturally, Guehi has the ability to fulfil his contract and secure the move he desires, yet Newcastle, somewhat surprisingly, continues to be a contender.
Newcastle fans will be delighted if their team swoops in for Guehi and stops him from joining Liverpool after the Alexander Isak saga.
Isak refused to play for the Magpies after Liverpool's interest in the striker emerged and eventually got a move to Merseyside on deadline day, having burned his bridges in Newcastle.
Isak said upon joining Liverpool: "I feel amazing. It’s been a long journey to get here. But I’m super-happy to be a part of this team, this club and everything it stands for. It’s something I’m proud of and I’m really looking forward to it.
"I’m just happy it’s done and that I can get back to work. I’m looking forward to seeing my teammates and the fans, and getting back out there."
Isak added: "I think I have a lot to give, I think I have a lot to improve. I’m a striker, but I always want to give as much as possible to the team, mainly goals, but much more than that as well. I want to win everything. Yeah, (as simple as that)."
